Urgent Help in Bad Weather

by admin on January 11, 2010

With the continuing bad weather, both Calderdale and Kirklees Council are now operating urgent help lines for older people who are struggling because of the ice and snow.

In KIRKLEES, anyone whose wellbing is at risk and who needs help because they cannot get out is being asked to contact the Council’s newly-launched winter weather helpline on 01484 41488824. Please note that this should NOT be used for gritting requests.

There are also plenty of links to information about the current weather problems on the Council website home page.

In CALDERDALE, calls for emergency assistance are being routed through the normal Council number 0845 245 6000. They are particularly focussing on urgent help, assistance with basic provisions, heating, and collecting prescriptions.

Again, there are links to further information from the Council’s website.

Here at Age Concern Calderdale and Kirklees, we’re working to keep our services operating and to provide help and support wherever possible – please contact any of our offices if you need assistance.

Cold Weather Payments

by admin on January 11, 2010

Older people who receive Pension Credit will be getting Cold Weather Payments to help with heating bills. (People on Job Seekers Allowance with a Pensioner Premium also qualify).

The payments of £25 per week are triggered automatically when temperatures fall below freezing for seven consecutive days. Whether or not you receive a payment depends on your postcode, as each postcode is linked to a specific Met Office weather station.

So far this year, people in most of Calderdale who qualify will receive FOUR payments; however, in parts of Brighouse and Rastrick they will receive TWO.

You can check the exact position for your address by putting your postcode into this on-line information page.

These payments are in addition to the winter fuel allowance, which is paid to everyone aged 60 and over.

The following websites provide more inofmration about the cold weather payments
